But Conchita Martinez's Flushing Meadows campaign is over after the 12th seed slipped to a 7-5 6-4 defeat against Australia's Alicia Molik.
Davenport, who beat Camerin 6-2 6-4, will now play Hungary's Melinda Czink, who beat 28th seed Lisa Raymond 4-6 6-4 6-1, while Molik faces Argentina's Paola Suarez, the 24th seed.
Amelie Mauresmo raced into the third round with a two-set destruction of Stephanie Cohen-Aloro.
The fifth seed, a semi-finalist at Flushing Meadow 12 months ago, took just 60 minutes to dispatch her French compatriot 6-2 6-2.
Mauresmo will now face Russian junior champion Maria Kirilenko in the third round after she beat German Anca Barna 3-6 7-6 (7/5) 7-5.
"I thought I played a good match," said Mauresmo, who finally looks fit after being forced to miss Wimbledon.
"I think every part of my game was working very well."
Top seed Kim Clijsters booked her place in the third round, crushing American Laura Granville 6-1 6-1 in 49 minutes.
The world number one will now next meet Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who beat Hungary's Petra Mandula 6-3 6-3.

Daniela Hantuchova let her tennis do all the talking in her straight sets victory over Julia Vakulenko.
The ninth seed overcame the Russian 6-0 7-6 in an edgy match on Armstrong stadium court.
She sealed victory on her fourth match point when the Russian drove a backhand long and will now play Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn, who ousted 18th seed Patty Schnyder 6-4 6-3.
South Africa's Amanda Coetzer, the 14th seed, had to come from behind to beat Austria's Barbara Schett 3-6 7-5 6-2.
Russian Vera Zvonareva, the 13th seed, also had a hard job overcoming American Ashley Harkleroad 6-3 4-6 6-1.
