Gamewatch: Ferrero v Verkerk
All the action as third seed Juan Carlos Ferrero wins the French Open by sweeping aside unseeded Dutchman Martin Verkerk.

Third set

Ferrero 6-2 Verkerk
Ferrero drops to his knees as a final rasping forehand brings him a first Grand Slam title.

Ferrero 5-2 Verkerk
Ferrero steps up the pressure and forces three break points. The Spaniard powers a forehand down the line on the first - and he is one game away from the title.

Ferrero 4-2 Verkerk
Unbelievably, Ferrero double-faults for the fifth time in the match and Verkerk suddenly finds himself with a break point. Ferrero saves it but then has the crowd astonished as his drop shot lands in the net. The Spaniard finds a forehand winner and survives.

In an epic game, Verkerk clings on by saving six break points. On the first, he produces an athletic backhand overhead and staves off three others with brave winners. He still needs plenty more miracles.

Ferrero is handling the increasingly gusty conditions much better than his opponent and the Spaniard has two break points. Verkerk saves both, the second with a backhand which just touches the outside of the line.


Second set

Ferrero 6-3 Verkerk
Ferrero opens with a nervy double fault but recovers well to engineer two set points after another winning drop shot. Verkerk smacks a backhand wide to put Ferrero in complete control of the match.

Ferrero 5-3 Verkerk
Ferrero earns two more break points with a flowing backhand down the line and the Spaniard makes no mistake this time forcing Verkerk into a volley error with a dipping return.

Ferrero 4-3 Verkerk
Ferrero holds fairly comfortably, despite throwing in a third double fault of the match.

Ferrero 3-3 Verkerk
A wild backhand from Verkerk hands his opponent two break points. The Dutchman succeeds in seeing off both - the second with a typically testing first serve.

Ferrero 3-2 Verkerk
Ferrero throws in a very shaky service game, double-faulting to hand Verkerk a break point. The Spaniard produces a deadly serve out wide to save it and goes on to hold.

Ferrero 2-2 Verkerk
Verkerk moves to game point after a well-constructed rally, finished with a pinpoint backhand into the corner. But Ferrero fights back for a break point and is back on level terms.

A fired-up Verkerk earns two break points with some powerful attacking play. He takes the first after a thrilling rally which the Dutchman finishes by chasing down a drop shot and then dispatching an easy volley.

Verkerk wins two cheap points on his serve and clenches his fist with delight. His fifth ace clinches the game to love, and the crowd cheer wildly.

Ferrero 1-0 Verkerk
Ferrero shows no signs of letting up in the second set, as Verkerk continues to struggle to find any rhythm. An ace from the Spaniard seals the game.


First set

Ferrero 6-1 Verkerk
In the best rally of the match, Ferrero reacts quickly to put away a volley and earn his first set point. Verkerk saves it with a stunning backhand down the line but Ferrero takes the set at the second opportunity with another rasping forehand.

Ferrero 5-1 Verkerk
Ferrero is showing why he is regarded as the world's best player on clay - a delightful drop shot the highlight of an easy hold for the Spaniard.

Ferrero 4-1 Verkerk
Verkerk is in trouble again as Ferrero comes to grips with the Dutchman's serve. Ferrero finds a deep return on break point and Verkerk mishits his reply to go down a double break.

Ferrero 3-1 Verkerk
Ferrero's forehand is the difference between the two players at the moment, and only a double fault prevents him from holding to love.

Ferrero 2-1 Verkerk
Verkerk fires down a 204km/h ace to get back to 30-30 after opening with a third double fault of the match. A simple volley wins him the game, and should settle his nerves.

Ferrero 2-0 Verkerk
Ferrero appears to be the less nervous of the two and he delivers a second serve ace to further boost his confidence before holding to 15.

Ferrero 1-0 Verkerk
Verkerk, in his first Grand Slam final, wins the toss and elects to serve. In a game lasting 10 minutes, the Dutchman delivers his first two aces and two double faults. Ferrero has four break points and finally takes a fifth when Verkerk nets a backhand.
