Men's round-up
Brazilian Flavio Saretta beat '96 champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov |
Former champion Carlos Moya cruised to an easy win over big-serving Australian Mark Philippoussis to reach the third round of the French Open.
The fourth seed raced to a 4-0 lead in the first set and rarely looked back as he wrapped up the match 6-2 6-4 7-6 (9/7).
Moya handed out few favours to Philippoussis in a one-sided affair but was generous enough to give him back a crucial point in the decisive tiebreak.
"Well, if the ball is good, this is what I think everybody should do," the 1998 champion said.
"I think it is normal what I did."
Moya will now meet Argentine clay court specialist Juan Ignacio Chela.
Former champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov fell to defeat at the hands of Brazil's Flavio Saretta, losing 6-4 3-6 6-0 6-7 (0/7) 6-4 in an epic second-round encounter at the French Open.
Kafelnikov staved off Saretta's first match point at 6-5 in the fourth set but the 17th seed could not prevent his 22-year-old opponent sealing the match after three hours and 55 minutes.
The Russian had enjoyed a productive clay court season prior to coming to Paris, winning 10 of his 14 matches, but Saretta had also made it to the last eight in three tournaments on the surface this season.
The Brazilian will face qualifier Galo Blanco in the third round after the Spaniard defeated Argentina's Mariano Puerta 6-2 6-2 6-4.
Australian Open finalist Rainer Schuettler dropped the first set before easing to a 4-6 6-2 6-4 6-0 win over France's Jean-Rene Lisnard.
But Russia's Davis Cup hero Mikhail Youzhny continued a miserable run in 2003 with a 3-6 6-4 5-7 6-2 6-4 defeat to qualifier Attila Savolt.
Fourteenth seed Jiri Novak and 22nd seed Wayne Ferreira of South Africa are also through despite dropping early sets in their matches.
And Xavier Malisse had to come from two sets behind to overcome the challenge of Austrian Stefan Koubeck in the fifth.
Wednesday's final game was cut short when bad light intervened. American star James Blake, the 24th seed, and Ivan Ljubicic will be back on Thursday to finish their match with the Croatian leading 6-3 4-6 7-6.
