Seles suffers shock defeat
Women's round-up

USA's Monica Seles
Seles is a three-time French Open winner
Twelfth seed Monica Seles is out of the French Open following a shock straight sets defeat to Russian Nadia Petrova.

Seles, a three-time French Open champion, slumped to a 6-4 6-0 first round defeat in just under an hour - her earliest ever Grand Slam exit.

The American had never been beaten before the quarter-finals in 10 previous appearances in the tournament she won three times between 1990 and 1992.

There was no such trouble for third seed Venus Williams.

The American joined her sister Serena in the second round by beating compatriot Samantha Reeves 6-2 6-4.

Last year's runner-up, who was sporting a bandage on her left knee, has failed to win a Grand Slam event since her triumph at the 2001 US Open.

She next meets Australian Evie Dominikovic, who earlier defeated Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-0, 6-1.

Williams is joined in the second round by second seed Kim Clijsters, who swept past Amy Frazier 6-2 6-0.

The Belgian made short work of her American opponent with a superb display of power from the back of the court and deft touches at the net.

Clijsters wrapped up the first set inside 25 minutes and wasted no time in securing six games without reply in the second to set up a clash with either Marlene Weingartner or Lindsay Lee-Waters.

But 13th seed Elena Dementieva of Russia was beaten 6-3 6-3 by Spaniard Maria Sanchez Lorenzo.

Jelena Dokic, the 10th seed, defeated Germany's Angelika Roesch 6-4 6-4 to join Clijsters in round two.

The 10th seed was too strong and too consistent from the baseline for her inexperienced opponent.

Dokic, a quarter-finalist last year, will tackle Tina Pisnik in the next round.

Sixth seed Lindsay Davenport opened her bid for the only title missing from her Grand Slam collection with a 6-2 6-0 demolition of Indonesian qualifier Wynne Prakusya.

Davenport showed no signs of the hamstring injury which forced her to pull out of the Spanish Open earlier this month as she wrapped up the match in just 42 minutes.

She will play Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan for a place in the third round.

Argentina's Paola Suarez - seeded number 30 - also had little trouble in overcoming Romania's Edina Gallovits 6-1 6-0.
