Morgan had his chances in his Melbourne semi-final on Friday |
Britain's George Morgan missed out on a final spot in the Australian Open boys' singles after losing to top seed Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic. The 17-year-old from Bolton, seeded fourth, had impressed in Melbourne with his epic 10-8 win in the last set against Mate Delic in round three. But Vesely proved more resilient as Morgan failed to convert six break points, losing 6-3 6-4 in 73 minutes. Morgan claimed the prestigious Orange Bowl title in Florida last year. The Briton did not drop a set on his way to the third round, with victories over Brazilian Thiago Moura Monteiro and Korean Jae Hwan Kim. His first big test was Croatia's 14th seed Delic and he had to battle through three sets over 155 minutes, before a more comfortable win over Jeson Patrombon of the Philippines set up his semi-final spot. Morgan, currently ranked 930 in the world, became the first Briton to win the 18-and-under singles title at the Orange Bowl in Miami last December - a title Andy Murray also claimed but in the 12-and-under category. The 17-year-old left-hander Vesely, world number 864, will play Australian Luke Saville for the men's junior Australian Open crown.
