Join Mark Ashenden for what promises to be a sensational match. Byyyeeee. 2253:Rafael Nadal: "I started the match nervous, without rhythm. Andy is a very aggressive player and it was very difficult. He can rally from the baseline and from the net, it's very difficult to pass him. The atmosphere here is fantastic, I'm very happy to win." Rafael Nadal beats Andy Roddick 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 Nadal 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 Roddick Roddick, teeth gritted, is determined to take this match to a second tie-breaker. Nadal* 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 0-1 Roddick Clearly still seething, Roddick emphatically takes the lead in the decider with yet another brutal service game. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal* 3-6 7-6 (7-5) Roddick Jaw-dropping from Nadal, who thumps a sensational return right on the tramlines with a 4-3 lead. An ace and unforced Roddick error means it's 6-3 and three set points to the Spaniard. Roddick saves one and then another with a thumping 138mph ace but it's not enough as Rafa levels to win his first ever set at the O2 Arena. Game very much on. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal* 3-6 6-6 (3-3) Roddick Nadal earns a mini-break at 2-1 as Roddick overcooks a backhand return. Roddick slams a phenomenal double-handed backhand on the line to level once again before Nadal pumps a weak forehand into the net to go 2-3 down. But Nadal sends a backhand winner down the line to level the tie-break at 3-3 at the changeover. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal* 3-6 6-6 Roddick Roddick slams a backhand return into the net, allowing Rafa to level at 30-30. Roddick goes with a trusted serve wide to Nadal's forehand before slamming a 132mph missile down the middle to take the second set to a tie-break, the first of the 2010 tournament. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal 3-6 6-5 Roddick* Roddick's footwork earns him a 15-30 window against the serve but Rafa roars back to 30-30 with a thunderous cross-court forehand winner, a point which is met with a vigorous fist pump. Roddick flashes a forehand return long, much to his disbelief, allowing Rafa to slam down an ace to claim the game. A-Rod to serve to stay in the set. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal* 3-6 5-5 Roddick Awesome service game from Roddick, slamming down an ace along with a couple of unplayables for his second successive love service game. Looks like we could be set for our first tie-break of the tournament. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal 3-6 5-4 Roddick* Nadal, sporting a headband the colour of a Buddhist monk's robe, slams down his second ace with power and precision, taking him to within one game of levelling this intriguing match. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal* 3-6 4-4 Roddick Roddick levels up the second set in record time, his serve buzzing like a swarm of angry killer bees past Nadal. * denotes NEXT to serve FedFan-Kim on 606: "Let's not forget the last time they met it went to three sets and Roddick won. He did however come from a set down in that match, so momentum was probably a big factor." Nadal 3-6 4-3 Roddick* Nadal is drilling points he was missing in the first set, with muscular forehands landing on a sixpence before launching a quite sensational kick serve which loops high above Roddick's head. The American is clearly amazed at the height on the serve as he sends his return into the net. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal* 3-6 3-3 Roddick Roddick, clearly seething at being broken for the first time in the match, slams down a ferocious service game to love. The former world number one does not want to go into a third set. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal 3-6 3-2* Roddick Signs Nadal has shaken off his first-set aberration with a classic backhand up the line after luring Roddick with the bait. And Nadal takes the lead for the first time in a the set with a 129mph serve. The King of Clay is back. * denotes NEXT to serve From Anon, text 81111: "Nadal's forehand looks as bad as mine! Still hope for both of us yet though!"
Nadal* 3-6 2-2 Roddick Roddick's serve is cooking with propane right now, slamming two 130mphers down the centre. However, the American unleashes his first double fault at the worst possible time to give Nadal a breakback point. And the Majorcan does exactly that as Roddick goes a little too clever for a forehand. Strap yourselves in for a frenetic finish... * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal 3-6 1-2 Roddick* Wallop! A-Rod takes a leaf out of the Rafa school of booming forehands to take a 15-40 lead and sniff two break points. He calls for Hawk-Eye following a Rafa serve, which goes against him, but he earns his second break of the match with a backhand at Rafa's body. Upset o'clock brewing in Greenwich. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal* 3-6 1-1 Roddick Que pena! Rafa overhits the simplest of forehand winners with Roddick well and truly defeated. The American capitalises on the error and levels. * denotes NEXT to serve
Nadal 3-6 1-0 Roddick* A clearly below-par Rafael Nadal stares deep into his strings as he serves up his fourth double fault of the evening. However, he pulls himself together to hold his serve and take an early lead in the second set. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal* 3-6 Roddick Four booming first serves and the first set is Roddick's. Two huge serves before an unforced forehand error from Nadal sees Roddick earn three set points after 49 minutes. And the three-time Wimbledon finalist pummels a first serve up the middle, with Nadal spooning the ball into the net, to win the first set against the world number one. Come on, who predicted that? * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal 3-5 Roddick* Roddick loops up his first lob of the match, but it's not good enough, although Nadal can't get enough racquet on the backhand return to clear the net. However, a poor backhand slice is drilled into the net as the Spaniard spurns a 40-15 lead to deuce. But an unforced error with a double-handed backhand from the baseline allows Nadal to take his evening's first-set tally to three. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal* 2-5 Roddick Rafa finds his stride around the court, slamming a booming forehand winner down the line after sending the American all over court. Oooh, what a shot from Roddick, taking the pace off the ball with the deftest of forehand half-volleys at the net, done with the precision of a veteran safecracker. The number eight seed claims the next point and it's back to a three-game gap. Rafa serving to stay in the set, not something I thought I would be typing at this stage. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal 2-4 Roddick* Nadal's forehand is still too profligate, allowing Roddick to pick up points he would normally never win against the world number one. However, the Spaniard executes his best service game of the match to reduce the arrears to two games. * denotes NEXT to serve FedFan-Kim on 606: "Apparently A-Rod has the best record this season against the other top 7. I have just looked this up. He is 7-1 combined against Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, Soderling and Berdych in 2010. He has not played Murray or Ferrer." Nadal* 1-4 Roddick Signs of vintage Nadal as the Spaniard wallops a thumping forehand winner past a static Roddick. The American looks certain to go 0-30 down as Nadal charges to the net following a soft return, but Roddick holds his ground and somehow uses his lightning reactions to fathom a winner from the middle of the court, much to the delight of the crowd. A vicious double-handed backhand from Nadal cuts the deficit at 40-30 before a deft backhand return takes the game to deuce. A few more follow before another unforced error from Nadal - once again on the forehand - sees Roddick regain his three-game cushion. * denotes NEXT to serve From Anon, text 81111: "Talking of songs, was at the Federer-Ferrer match yesterday and they played Shakira's Gypsy - now that's got to be Rafa's theme tune??" Nadal 1-3 Roddick* Roddick is sending Nadal around to all corners at the back of the court, but he miss-hits a sliced backhand return from the world number one into the net. However, Rafa slams a regulation forehand from the back of the net wide of the tramlines, with the bounce of the ball met by a round of "oooooohs" from the disbelieving members of the public. He misses another, although not quite as badly before his third double fault of the match takes the game to deuce. However, the trusted forehand twice gets him out of trouble to register his first game of the evening. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal* 0-3 Roddick Roddick slams down three aces, the second at a whopping 141mph, much to the delight of the braying crowd. A tip of the baseball cap and he steams into his corner for a well-deserved drink. Rafa's rustiness is being brutally exposed right now. * denotes NEXT to serve Nadal 0-2 Roddick* Rafa's forehand is not quite right while his serve needs serious oiling. A double fault allows Roddick to take a 0-40 lead at the first ask. Rafa reduces the arrears to two break points but once again his serve looks brittle, conceding his second double fault to hand Roddick a surprise lead. Murmurs around the O2 - and it's not because Kylie has gone for a beverage either. * denotes NEXT to serve
Nadal* 0-1 Roddick Rafa brushes off the cobwebs with a booming forehand winner on the run down the line to take a 15-30 lead. Roddick steams into the net following his serve at the next point, but cannot control his volley as Rafa earns two break points. But his advantage evaporates as Roddick drills two precise serves close to the Spaniard's body before a kick serve wide out to Nadal's forehand wins the very first service game of the match. Excellent resilience from the American. * denotes NEXT to serve 2015: A-Rod to serve first. Game on. 2013: Kyyyyyyyylie's here! Ohmigod, she's like, sooo, Ohmigod, I can't breathe.
2007: Strains of "London Calling" accompany billions of flashes across the O2, although my colleague Piers Newbery is tiring of the famous Clash anthem - and we're only two days into the event. My suggestion would be line up a host of London-based songs - expect Lily Allen's "LDN" which I despise. Any other front-runners? I'm all over The National's "England", my favourite song of the moment. 1959: So this is the ninth meeting between the two players, with Nadal leading 5-3 in the victory stakes. Encouragingly for Roddick, the American won the last encounter between the pair, a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 semi-final victory in Miami in April and has won three out of five matches on hard courts. "I have to be aggressive," says Roddick, who admits his game plan might be "high-risk". 1955: "There's no such thing as an easy draw in this competition" says Andy Roddick, the last man to qualify for the end-of-season ATP World Tour Finals. Fresh from his Grand Slam-completing antics in New York, Rafa - who hasn't competitively picked up a racquet for well over a month now - has been having chats with the omnipresent Argentine football legend Diego Maradona, who seems to be enjoying his time in the capital immensely. 1949: Ahhhh, winter nights in London, chestnuts roasting on an open fire, numerous tube disruptions, endless Monday night supermarket queues, top-class tennis in SE10. I'll have the last one thanks. Rafael Nadal v Andy Roddick coming up.
