Sampras' consolation
Pete Sampras
Sampras leads the rankings for the first time this year
Despite losing the US Open final, Pete Sampras has moved into first place in the ATP Champions Race.

Sampras rises from third to first place in the rankings - the first time he has led the race - with the 140 points earned for finishing runner-up at Flushing Meadows.

His US Open conqueror Marat Safin has moved from fourth to third in the Champions Race behind Gustavo Kuerton thanks to the 200 points his first Grand Slam title earned him. It is also the Russian's highest ranking of the year.

Biggest mover of the week was American veteran Todd Martin, who earned 90 points by reaching the US Open semi-finals.

  ATP Champions Race
1. Pete Sampras (USA), 637 points
2. Gustavo Kuerten (Brazil), 623 points
3. Marat Safin (Russia), 615 points
4. Magnus Norman (Sweden), 586 points
5. Lleyton Hewitt (Australia), 435 points
6. Alex Corretja (Spain), 422 points
7. Andre Agassi (USA), 416 points
8. Thomas Enqvist (Sweden), 402 points
9. Evgueni Kafelnikov (Russia), 392 points
10. Tim Henman (Britain), 321 points.
Martin, ranked as low as 119th in July, rises from 85th to 41st in the Champions Race.

Safin's $800,000 cheque for winning at Flushing Meadows takes him to the top of the prize money list ahead of Sampras.

The 20-year-old has won $2,110,869 this year, taking his career tournament earnings to $3,061,573.

Sampras is second on the money-winners' list with $1,924,598 earned, just ahead of Kuerten.

He has now amassed $40,733,159 in career winnings.

Despite his third round exit, Tim Henman remains in 10th place in the Champions Race.

Greg Rusedski falls four places to 78th and Arvind Parmar drops three to 133rd.

There was better news for fellow Britons Jamie Delgado, who rose 12 places to 155th, and Barry Cowans, up 10 at 164th. That was despite both players exiting the US Open in the first round.
