| Safin blocking Pistol Pete's bid ![]() Pete Sampras: Gunning for Grand Slam number 14 It is ten years since Pete Sampras arrived on the world tennis scene with a stunning win at the US Open. At the tender age of 19, it was not possible for experts to go out on a limb and predict that this would be the man to dominate the sport for a decade. But on Sunday evening, the man they call 'Pistol Pete' can make it a record 14 Grand Slams and five US Opens if he beats Russian Marat Safin. Despite not entering the tournament in the best of form, the American has overcome potentially tricky opponents in Dutchman Richard Krajicek and Australia's Lleyton Hewitt. During those matches, the Sampras serve, arguably the greatest the game of tennis has seen, has started to dominate and make life hard for the man standing on the other side of the net. Hunger
"I want to win it and win more majors after that," Sampras said. "I feel like I've got a lot of good years left in me to really contend for major tournaments. "That's what drives me and thats what keeps me going. I dont want to have any regrets when I look back on my tennis." In Safin, he faces a player who is, by common consensus, one of those likely to carry the torch for mens tennis at the start of this century. Victory Not only is the 20-year-old the first Russian to reach the US Open final, he also holds a victory over Sampras from the last time the two played.
That was in Toronto, where he beat Sampras in the quarter-finals after the American squandered two match points. "It's nice to be in the finals but something is missing," said Safin. "I want to win it and I'd like to know how it feels to be the champion here." Confidence
"He believes he can beat me and thats a big bonus for him. "But this time it will be a final of a major and he hasn't played many of them." As with many of the men that Sampras has beaten in Grand Slam finals, Safin comes equipped with weapons of his own, including a powerful serve and strong groundstrokes. "Marat possesses a big serve. I'll need to get it back. Hes a powerful player and I you let him play and give him high shots to the forehand or backhand, he'll crack it," said the man hoping to equal Jimmy Connors' record tally of US Open wins. Goal "My goal is to hold onto serve and get a couple of chances to break him and convert." Safin comes into this final in a similar positon to his opponent did ten years ago. Back then, the man on the other side of the net was a similarly raw and green American by the name of Andre Agassi.
Whether Safin can emulate Sampras' feat of winning in his first Grand Slam final at such a young age is dependant on whether he can find a similar outlook. "Ten years ago, I was so overwhelmed that I came out with nothing to loose, I didn't know what I was doing. I just played a couple of good matches and next thing I knew I won the Open," admitted Sampras. "My game wasnt that good. I just had two hot weeks. After that, I struggled and it took me six to eight months to really back it up." |
