Robson was hoping to qualify by right for her first Grand Slam |
Laura Robson missed out on a place in the main draw of the US Open after losing in the last round of qualifying. The British teenager made a good start against Spain's Nuria Llagostera Vives, winning the first set 6-2 in New York. The 16-year-old lost the second set 6-4 but led 3-1 in the deciding set only to lose the next five games. Robson bowed out at the same stage last year, beaten by Eva Hrdinova of the Czech Republic despite leading 4-1 and 6-5 in the final set. The former junior Wimbledon champion, who was bidding to reach her first Grand Slam tournament by right, bounced back from losing her serve in the first game of the match to take the opening set. But she dropped her serve three times as Llagostera Vives, who is now ranked 126th in the world but was once as high as 35th, levelled the match. The Spaniard, 30, who has won two WTA Tour titles, used all her experience in the decider to break Robson's rhythm, towelling herself down at the back of the court when the Briton was ready to serve. Robson had beaten Russian Vesna Manasieva and former world number four Jelena Dokic to put herself in with a chance of earning a place in the main draw. British number two Katie O'Brien bowed out in the second round of qualifying after suffering a 6-1 3-6 6-1 loss to Ukraine's Olga Savchuk in a bad-tempered contest.
