Baker is 244th in the world rankings |
Britain's Jamie Baker took a step closer to the main draw of the US Open after winning his first-round qualifying match in New York. The British number three beat Joao Souza of Brazil 6-3 6-2. But in the women's qualifying draw Heather Watson could not progress as the 18-year-old was beaten by Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino 2-6 6-4 6-3. Fellow Britons Alex Bogdanovic, Laura Robson and Naomi Cavaday are all still to play because of a rain delay. British number two Katie O'Brien is already in the second round of qualifying after beating Ukrainian Lesya Tsurenko on Tuesday. Andy Murray, Elena Baltacha and Anne Keothavong are in the main draw and the trio will learn their respective opponents on Thursday. Watson's defeat came to a player who is 11 years her senior, but she is now likely to go into the junior competition aiming to defend the title she won last year. "It was unfortunate today," Watson told the LTA website. "She had a strong start in the first set and then I wasn't able to take advantages of the opportunities that were there, especially in the third set, and she got herself back in there in the third. "It's all experiences and this is only going to make her grow from here and for the future."
