Borwell & Kop-Jones held their nerve after dropping the second set |
British doubles number one Sarah Borwell and her American partner Raquel Kops-Jones upset top seeds Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs in Stanford, USA. Borwell and Kop-Jones won their first-round encounter 6-0 4-6 12-10. "We deserved that," said Borwell. "It's a huge hurdle we have been working hard to get over for the last seven months and we finally managed it. "I could cry with relief because we just kept working hard and hoping our time would come." The 30-year-old Borwell is 70th in the world doubles rankings, with Kops-Jones seven places higher, while Raymond is ranked 15th and Stubbs ninth. Borwell and Kops-Jones have already reached the WTA semi-finals in Ponte Vedra and won an ITF title in Nottingham this year.
