James Ward thrashed by Mardy Fish in Atlanta

James Ward
Ward dropped his serve five times against Fish

James Ward's participation in the Atlanta Tennis Championships proved short-lived as he was beaten 6-1 6-2 by American Mardy Fish in round one.

The 23-year-old Londoner was given a wildcard for the tournament but was no match for sixth seed Fish.

Andy Roddick also received a wildcard after making a last-minute decision to go to Atlanta, which is hosting an ATP event for the first time in nine years.

The world number nine will face fellow American Rajeev Ram in his first match.

John Isner is the second seed in Georgia, while Lleyton Hewitt is also in the field.
