LTA needs shake-up - Richard Bloomfield

Briton Richard Bloomfield said the Lawn Tennis Association needs a "shake-up" as he made a huge leap in the rankings after reaching an ATP semi-final.

The 27-year-old rose 260 places to 292 in the world after a surprise run to the ATP semi-finals in Newport, USA.

And Bloomfield was subsequently critical of the current LTA regime.

"I think it's four years they've been there and at the moment British tennis is at a bit of a low," he told 5 live. "I think it needs a real shake-up."

Bloomfield had to battle through three qualifying rounds at the Hall of Fame Championships in Rhode Island before entering the main draw, where he beat Christophe Rochus, Santiago Giraldo and Ryan Harrison.

He lost 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 to eventual champion Mardy Fish in the last four, and said that the only contact from the LTA afterwards had come from Leon Smith, head of men's tennis and British Davis Cup captain.

"I got a text off Leon and that was about it," said Bloomfield. "Leon is Davis Cup captain so he's obliged to do stuff like that.

"I'm not really fussed, whatever happens, happens. I don't really pay much attention to it because it's not worth my while to get caught up in all that."

Bloomfield has risen from number 12 in Britain to number five in the latest rankings and, asked if he would consider a Davis Cup role, he said: "Definitely, I mean, it's for your country.

"If the circumstances are right and there are no politics involved and you can just go out and play - being part of the English system there are a lot of politics going on - I'd love to play Davis Cup."

Bloomfield, who picked up £14,171 in prize money, had been ranked as high as 176 but slipped to 552, partly due to back problems.

And although he said he was thankful for funding he had received in the past, the Norwich-based player insisted the system needed overhauling.

"They keep on changing it," he said. "Just have a good solid system where everybody knows if you win this tournament you get a certain amount, if you don't then you don't get anything.

"Then you know where you stand, whereas at the moment it's a little bit up and down what you get."
