King and Shvedova win women's doubles final

An emotional women's singles runner-up Vera Zvonareva suffered her second defeat of the day as she and Elena Vesnina lost the women's doubles final.

They were beaten 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 by Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova in only the third of these finals at Wimbledon to be contested by two unseeded teams.

Zvonareva broke down in tears on her chair after losing a close first set.

And the pressure must have played a part in the second set which King and Shvedova completely dominated.

"It is kind of scary, it hasn't sunk in yet," said King.

"We have such a good time on court because we are such good friends on the court and this is what we have worked for. We enjoy spending time together and our games come together really well."

All four players were broken once in the first nine games of a 58-minute opening set which went to a tie-break, in which the Russians were edged out.

Zvonareva was not the same player in the second set, in which she was broken in the third game, and Vesnina was clearly the dominant partner in their team.

King and Shvedova raced into a 5-1 lead and although Zvonareva won her next service game, it only delayed their opponents' victory.

They are the first unseeded winners of the competition since Helen Gourlay Cawley and JoAnne Russell beat top seeds Martina Navratilova and Betty Stove in the 1977 final and the sixth overall since seedings started in 1927.

The other two finals in which two unseeded teams took part were in 1974 and 1975.
