1858: "It was a tough first match on grass," Murray told BBC Sport. "He served very well and I didn't return particularly well. It isn't what I expected from a Spaniard, having a player come forward to the net. I haven't played a serve-volleyer this year so it was tricky but I started returning it well and we had some good rallies and I made some good lobs and passing shots. I thought I moved pretty well and I hit the ball well."

1855: So Andy Murray begins his defence of the Aegon Championships title at Queen's with a solid straight sets victory over Spain's Ivan Navarro. The Scot appeared to be feeling his long-term knee problem in the first set but roared through the second to set up a third-round meeting with either American Mardy Fish or Santiago Giraldo of Colombia.

Job well done. Murray looks like he's just getting out of first gear, Navarro appears spent. The Scot races to 15-40 and has two match points. Although his Spanish opponent saves the first with a routine smash, on the second Murray comes up with a laser-guided forehand winner down the line. Game, set and match Murray.

A gritty hold puts Murray within a game of the match. The British number one gives Navarro the run-around and he's panting Chiwawa. Murray comes through to 30 with a fine winner - it's called long but the umpire overrules.

Navarro twice finds the net to give Murray 15-30 and although he recovers, the Spaniard is passed at the net as Murray takes us to deuce. A slam-the-door-shut volley gives the third seed game point. He doesn't take it but makes no mistake at the second time of asking. Very few freebies for Murray today, a real good workout.

But Murray can't capitalise and once again his movement appears a little impaired. Watch that knee, Andy, Wimbledon's just around the corner! Navarro squanders three chances to serve out the game, twice as a result of brilliant Murray lobs. On his fourth opportunity, Murray nets a crosscourt backhand.

Navarro is battling away but Murray has his number. The Spaniard nets before Murray sends a lob long. The Scot gets to 40-15 but a couple of loose groundstrokes let Navarro back in. However, when Navarro goes long and then nets Murray is able to maintain his advantage. "Murray looks like a man who knows his serve will not be beaten today," says Greg Rusedski on the BBC Red Button.

Hints that a double-break could be on the cards as Murray gets to 30-30. But all credit to Navarro for holding firm. He holds with a gorgeous drop shot at the net. It stops dead, giving Murray no chance. Great hands, son.

Murray is far from happy with himself after putting an early forehand into the net. But his response is emphatic. A controlled pass up the line, a perfectly constructed point that ends with a volleyed winner and an ace. At 4-1 down, Navarro drills down an unreturnable serve which breaks a string on Murray's racquet and the world number four then half-volleys well long with his opponent at the net. When Navarro rushes in again Murray can only net, but the man from Alicante follows up with a wild forehand. A booming serve and an easy smash give Navarro 6-5 and set point. Murray saves with a brilliant crosscourt forehand pass and goes 7-6 up with a delicious volleyed backhand lob. A set point for the third seed but out comes the thunderous booming Navarro serve once more and Murray then puts a forehand into the net. A second Navarro set point is saved when the Spaniard slips and is passed before Murray gets his second set point with a smash. This time he makes no mistake, saving the best 'til last with a crosscourt backhand winner. What a way to finish a 45-minute first set.
