Bogdanovic impressed in the first set |
Alex Bogdanovic gave himself a good chance of reaching the second round at Queen's with his match against Grigor Dimitrov locked at one-set all. Rain forced the suspension of play with the scores 6-4 3-6 and with British number two Bogdanovic 2-1 ahead in the third set which had gone with service. He had broken the Bulgarian twice to take the first set then lost the next. Jamie Baker lost 6-1 6-4 to Denis Istomin, while fellow Briton James Ward was beaten 6-3 7-5 by Robby Ginepri. Ward was broken in his first service game as American Ginepri raced to a 3-0 advantage before he saved three break points to move 4-1 ahead. | 606: DEBATE |
Ginepri survived another break at 5-3 to take the first set. British number five Ward led 4-2 in the second set before his opponent broke and repeated the feat at 6-5 to seal the match. Ginepri will play compatriot and seventh seed Sam Querrey in round two. Uzbekistani Istomin, the world number 72, was dominant against British number three Baker. He eased to the first set before breaking the Scot's serve in the opening game of the next. Baker held in his following service games but the damage had already been done as Istomin booked his place in the second round at the first opportunity. Meanwhile, Julien Benneteau defeated fellow Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-2 6-4 while their compatriot Richard Gasquet, the number 11 seed, beat Japan's Kei Nishikori 6-3 6-3.
