Roger Federer beat Florent Serra 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-3) in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open, but it was an unconvincing display from the top seed.

The world number one was broken three times, each time when he led, and committed 35 unforced errors.

But Federer won eight consecutive service points in the tie-breakers and closed out the victory with an ace.

American Mardy Fish reached the fourth round by beating number 29 seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain 7-5 6-3.

Federer said: "Sure, I still have to tidy up my game a bit, having had one break up in the first and two breaks up in the second; it's normally something that doesn't get away from me.

"But I thought he came up with some good stuff, and that made it difficult for me to close it out... I don't think I gave it to him. I think he went to get it, which is a big difference."

Federer will play Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic after the 16th seed defeated Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 6-4 7-5.

World number 101 Fish, who upset defending champion and British number one Andy Murray in the second round, will next face 13th seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny.

Robin Soderling, the second-highest seed left in the draw had few problems in his 6-1 6-2 win over Philipp Petzschner and the fifth seed will next face ninth seed Fernando Gonzalez.

The Chilean claimed his sixth win in six games over Argentina's Juan Monaco, winning 6-7 (4/7) 6-4 6-2.

Seventh seed Marin Cilic edged out Marcos Baghdatis 6-3 6-4 and will play Fernando Verdasco in the fourth round.
