A Murray (GB) beat A Peya (Aut) 6-4 6-1 6-4
1503: What looked like it would be a tight battle turned into a runaway victory for Austria. So it's all down to Andy Murray and Alex Bogdanovic on Sunday... Britain need to win both the remaining singles matches to win this World Group promotion play-off - Murray's up first against Jurgen Melzer, then it will be down to Boggo against Alex Peya. It may take a miracle but they do happen occasionally - I'll be back tomorrow for both those matches so keep your fingers crossed and see you then. Murray/Hutchins 4-6 3-6 1-6 Knowle/Melzer

If Murray has struggled today, Knowle has been Mr Consistent. His returning may not be so spectacular as Melzer's is at times but he is so steady and that has hurt Britain almost as much. Murray has to fight hard to try to stem the tide and hold serve but he and Ross are being outclassed. Another break - start thinking about what you are going to have for lunch because this will be over within seconds, I fear. 1454: "I would fancy my chances against Hutchins. We have one of the greatest players in the world and we use that clown. Are we trying to throw this tie?"

Knowle's serve seems to be getting even bigger - and neither Murray or Hutchins are showing any signs of getting to grips with it. He wraps up another immaculate service game with an ace and victory is certainly in sight for the Austrians now.

Murray is just not sharp enough at the net right now and Melzer is taking full advantage, pulling some great shots out of the bag when the point should be in the bag for Britain. Hutchins is broken again and Jamie shows his frustration, smashing his racquet into the ground - difficult to see a way back for our boys in this one. 1451: "Are the people watching the tennis at Wimbledon actually alive???"

A great chance goes begging for Britain I'm afraid. Melzer's serve has wobbled when under pressure and that's exactly what happens here - Murray stepping up at 0-30 to smash a fierce return straight at the Austrian and set up three break-points. Britain cannot convert any of them, however, thanks to some superb serving by Melzer that sees him win five-straight points hold. Murray/Hutchins 4-6 3-6 1-1 Knowle/Melzer

If Britain are going to find a way back into this match, then now is the time to start. Knowle has not been broken yet in this match but Murray and Hutchins see a chink of light when they get to 0-30 before the big Austrian wakes up. Jamie seems to be slumbering himself and at 40-30 down he puts an easy volley into the net - I have lost count of the number of times he has done that today too. 1438: "At Wimbledon, I didn't want Andy to play today but now I do. Can we swap him for Jamie because he's playing rubbish. At least Ross has got the ball over the net!"

One step forward, two steps back for Britain. Just as Murray and Hutchins get our hopes up, Melzer and Knowle up the ante again. A mixture of poor serving and inspired returning take Austria to 0-40 and, although Ross battles back to deuce, Melzer scents blood and soon sets up another set point - Austria's sixth. A dubious line call saves Britain's skins again but, on set-point number seven, Knowle puts a smash away and Austria are now two sets up. 1405: "Looks like we'll be relying on Bogo tomorrow, match over then!"

Better, much better, from our boys as two stinging returns take them to 0-30 - why wait so long to start playing like this though? A big Melzer serve and a lucky Knowle net-cord bring Austria back to 30-all but Murray is still fighting - he forces Britain's first break-point since the start of the first set and, although that comes and goes, a Melzer double-fault promptly hands Britain another one. Austria are still fighting hard too but when a third chance comes along, finally, Murray converts it with a crisp volley. This one is not over yet! Murray/Hutchins 4-6 2-5 Knowle/Melzer
Britain have got enough to contend with without making things difficult for themselves...but that is exactly what they do here when, at 40-15 up, Murray double-faults then Ross puts what should have been an easy volley into the net. Jamie digs deep, however, and two big serves dig him out of a hole. Now, can they do any damage on Melzer's serve? "Jamie and Ross need to start holding serve and then find a crack somewhere or other in the Austrians' game. They have to grind this one out and hope the Austrians go off the boil a little bit."

Knowle, in case you didn't know it by now, has a big serve. So big in fact that our boys cannot get near it. Murray does pick up another point when a return comes off his frame but that is as good as it gets. "The Knowle serve has been flawless and the worrying thing for Britain is that they have not picked up hardly any points at all off the Austrians' serve in this set It is difficult to see how they can turn that around too."

Well, Britain win a point on the Melzer serve - which is a start after the speed at which the Austrians have ripped through them in this second set. He still holds with ease though - this is looking ominous. 1405: "Ross is serving well...but neither he or Jamie are returning well enough. That's not down to John Lloyd - Jamie should be doing better. Unfortunately, when they lose this, it'll be Lloyds head that will roll for not putting Andy up...he made the right decision though."

This is fast becoming a bit of a crisis for Britain - Austria have now won five of the last six games and there does not seem to be much Murray and Hutchins can do about it. Jamie does not serve badly here either but every return is at his feet and almost unplayable - Knowle and Melzer are at the top of their game at the moment. Murray/Hutchins 4-6 0-2 Knowle/Melzer

More trouble for Britain at the start of the second set. Melzer produces some magic at the baseline at 30-all - first with another of those cross-court forehand winners, then with a stinging backhand return that zips past Murray and Hutchins. That's another break folks. 1356: The Team Murray fans just held up letters spelling out-Judy Queen of Scots. The Murray grandparents are here today as well. They might not be enjoying this too much though.

It's not just the Brits in the crowd who are caked in face paint - there are a few Austrians here too and they are making all the noise at the moment. Melzer is turning on the style now and he is as handy at the net as he is from the back of the court. He reads a couple of returns perfectly to intercept with winners and Murray sends his next shot long to hand Knowle an easy hold. Murray/Hutchins 3-4 Knowle/Melzer
Hutchins' turn to come under a bit of pressure on his serve and the Austrians suddenly seem to have got the measure of him and Murray at the net. A beautiful lob by Knowle brings up a break-point and Melzer whips a wicked forehand into the tramlines for the winner. Austria are on top again. Murray/Hutchins 3-3 Knowle/Melzer
A double-fault by Melzer and a cracking inside-out forehand return by Hutchins bring us to 30-all. A chance of a break-point comes and goes when Jamie attacks a weak second serve but hits the top of the net with his backhand and Jurgen recovers to hold, just. "A good hold for Austria - Melzer was under pressure for the second game in a row. You can see this is going to be a tight match and it will be all about who wins the big points at the right times."

British captain John Lloyd is court-side and giving Murray plenty of encouragement on his serve after his early wobble. He doesn't need it in this game though, holding to love thanks to some booming deliveries, including a couple of pearlers on the second-serve. He looks a bit happier all of a sudden too. That's more like it. Some excellent returning by Murray and Hutchins take them to 15-40 and an instinctive volley by Ross seals the break-back. Britain are off the mark.

A nervy start for Britain as a mistake and a double fault by Jamie see him trail 0-30. Some excellent serve-volleying brings him back to 30-30 but a Melzer winner at the net gives Austria a break-point. Hutchins saves it with his first shot of the match - a volleyed winner - but Britain are soon back in trouble and Melzer seals the break with a superb winner. Oh dear.
Spotted Andy practising on an outside court on my way over. Groin strain's not that bad then.

We are going to see the making or breaking of him today."

Great Britain captain John Lloyd 1302: Here's the official chat: Andy Murray's injury is a very slight abductor (groin) strain, which he picked up a few days ago. The team feel Jamie Murray and Ross Hutchins are a strong partnership who have been practising well together and they don't want to risk Andy playing a five-set match before tomorrow...

BBC Sport's Caroline Cheese at Wimbledon 1249: Let's lay this on the line - with the tie finely poised at 1-1 after day one, it's vital Britain come out on top in this doubles match as that would mean a win for Andy Murray against Jurgen Melzer tomorrow would clinch overall victory. Otherwise, it will be down to Alex Bogdanovic against Alexander Peya...and forgive me for not being overly confident about the outcome of that one...Bog standard 1243: The big news from Wimbledon is that Ross Hutchins will be partnering Jamie Murray for the Brits, rather than Andy - which is what everyone, including the British number one, was expecting. That's the big news...the bad news is that Andy is not playing today because he is suffering from a slight abductor injury. Let's hope he is fit by tomorrow though... 1240: Afternoon folks.
