Highlights: Melzer recovers to beat Bogdanovic British number two Alex Bogdanovic failed to build on a promising start as Austria's Jurgen Melzer won the opening Davis Cup rubber 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 6-1. Despite taking the first set and being 4-2 up in the second, Bogdanovic was eventually overwhelmed by Melzer. The Briton failed to test him in a second set tie-breaker and the Olympic quarter-finalist, ranked 41st in the world, took control from that moment. World number 162 Bogdanovic could only take three games in the final two sets. Belgrade-born Bogdanovic made a blistering start, breaking the Austrian with an aggressive forehand winner to go 4-3 and winning his following two games to taking the first set. | 606: DEBATE |
After claiming his first ever set in a Davis Cup match that was not a dead rubber, the left-hander continued his impressive form and had two break points for a 5-1 lead. But he failed to convert and Melzer recovered his confidence to clinch the set as he started to make his power tell. The Austrian broke Bogdanovic three times in the third set and the fourth set was little more than a formality. Bogdanovic's loss put Austria in control of the Davis Cup World Group play-off, but Britain's world number four Andy Murray levelled the tie after beating Alex Peya 6-4 6-1 6-3 in Friday's second rubber.
