British number one Anne Keothavong is through to the main draw of the Bank of the West Classic after beating Julie Coin 6-1 6-0 in qualifying.

The world number 82 beat her French opponent in Stanford, California, to join the likes of Serena Williams and Elena Dementieva in the first round.

But former world number one Lindsay Davenport has withdrawn after suffering a recurrence of a knee injury.

Davenport injured her right knee in practice prior to Wimbledon.

The 32-year-old Olympic gold medallist won her first match at the grass-court Grand Slam event but pulled out prior to her second round match.

"Unfortunately my knee has not healed sufficiently since Wimbledon to allow me to compete," said Davenport.

The American is scheduled to play in Los Angeles next week and at next month's Beijing Olympics.

Wimbledon finalist Williams is the tournament's top seed followed by champion Anna Chakvetadze of Russia.

Williams has not played since losing to her sister Venus in the final of Wimbledon earlier this month.
