Cornet was ranked 20th going into the Budapest tournament |
Alize Cornet overcame a stomach illness to beat Andreja Klepac 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 and win the Budapest Grand Prix. It was a maiden WTA Tour title for the French second seed who said afterwards: "I was sick this morning. "I went to see the doctor before my match and I was not sure I'd be able to play, so it was tough." Cornet trailed 5-3 in the first set to unseeded Slovenian Klepac before she fought back to win a tie-break and then cruised through the second set.
She added: "When I was behind I just fought as hard as I could, and after I won the first set things went much better for me the rest of the match." Cornet had reached finals on clay in Acapulco and Rome this season, losing both. She was one of just two players in the current Top 20 not to have won a Tour title but now shakes that tag, leaving Belarussian Victoria Azarenka as the only one to still break through.
