Croat Karlovic is looking for his fourth singles title |
Croatian Ivo Karlovic is one win away from retaining his Nottingham Open title after edging past Frenchman Gael Monfils 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-4). But Monfils, the world number 32, is now a doubt for Wimbledon after suffering a shoulder injury. "It is not good. I couldn't serve and at the end I couldn't play. I hope I will be OK for Wimbledon," he said. Karlovic will face Fernando Verdasco in the final after the Spaniard overwhelmed Marin Cilic 6-3 6-1. The Croat will start favourite to win Saturday's final against a player more at home on clay. Karlovic, renowned for his huge serve, is the 18th seed at Wimbledon and is a possible fourth-round opponent for David Nalbandian. | 606: DEBATE |
"I'm pleased I'm in the final and also with the way I was playing, I was pretty happy," said the 29-year-old. "He was playing really good. I was struggling with my serve a little bit today but I was returning better. "I lost my serve in the second set, which I felt I shouldn't have, so I was unhappy about that. "But I returned a few points well when he served for the set at 5-4 and I was lucky enough to win that game and the match." Monfils said he had changed his tactics because of the injury, which he suffered before the match. "I came into the net more because I wanted to shorten the points. My physio will have a look at it, he said there is inflammation." Britain's Jamie Murray reached the doubles final when he and South African partner Jeff Coetzee beat Brazilians Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa 6-4 7-5 A break in the fifth game was enough to give them the opening set and they again proved stronger in the second after Murray saved two set points at 4-5. "The whole way through the match we were the better team, then
suddenly they had two set points so I felt a little hard done by. "But we were playing well and Jeff hit a couple of good returns in the next
game, we got the break and I think we deserved it," said Murray. "It was good to beat them, especially with Wimbledon coming up. Maybe we'll
play them again and we'll know we can beat them."
