Former world number one Amelie Mauresmo beat Germany's Sabine Lisicki 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 at the Qatar Open on Monday. France's Mauresmo has slipped out of the top 20 following a poor run of form that began 11 months ago after she underwent an emergency appendectomy.
"It was a good first match," said Mauresmo. "In the first match you don't really expect to play your best tennis.
"The confidence is growing every time I have a win I guess. It's definitely not the highest, but I'm fighting."

The number 10 seed Nadia Petrova of Russia retired with a stomach upset after losing the first set 6-2 and when leading the second 2-1 against Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues.
