Szavay will move into the world top 20 with the win |
Agnes Szavay came back from the brink to win the China Open with a tough three-set victory over Jelena Jankovic. Szavay, 18, continued her fine form after beginning the year just inside the top 200 on the WTA rankings.
After winning 6-7 (7-9) 7-5 6-2 for her second title of her year and beating her third top-10 opponent, she will gate-crash the top 20.
Serb Jankovic rallied from 0-5 down in the first-set tiebreaker to win it after saving three set points.
But she could not hold on in an epic battle that lasted two hours 55 minutes.
World number three Jankovic joined a list of victims for Hungarian Szavay that already includes Daniela Hantuchova at New Haven in August and Nadia Petrova at the US Open.
Jankovic will stay third in the world, trailing Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who withdrew from Beijing with an abdominal injury and was unable to defend her title.
