Kuznetsova ensured there will be a Russian in the final |
Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Agnes Szavay 6-1 6-4 in the US Open quarter-final to ensure there will be at least one Russian in the final. She will play Anna Chakvetadze, who had earlier beaten Shahar Peer 6-4 6-1.
Szavay had not dropped a set in the first four rounds but was never really in the contest as Kuznetsova took just nine minutes to go 3-0 up.
The teenager made eight unforced errors in the first set and Kuznetsova took just 67 minutes to wrap up the win.
After a poor first set, Szavay was broken in the opening game of the second and slipped to 4-1 down, before winning the next two games and rallying to pull the score round to 5-4.
But Kuznetsova, who won this title in 2004, was not to be denied and secured her place in the semi-finals when Szavay's return on match point failed to clear the net.
"I am so happy with my performance, especially in the first set," said the fourth seed afterwards.
"I felt very good and enjoyed it. I play Anna now and I am very happy there is definitely going to be one Russian in the final."
