Gilbert hopeful on Murray injury

Andy Murray could be fit to play in next week's Boodles Challenge exhibition event ahead of Wimbledon.

The Scot, who is up to a career-high nine in the latest rankings, has been out with a wrist injury but his coach Brad Gilbert remains optimistic.

"Andy's getting a lot better," Gilbert told BBC Sport. "Hopefully he's going to be playing Boodles next week and Wimbledon's around the corner.

"Right now he's getting better every day and we keep our fingers crossed."

The American insisted that the British number one would not risk his long-term fitness by rushing back.

"He won't play unless he's 100% - if that's the case then you'll see him," said Gilbert.

"Andy plays so well on this surface, and so few guys play well on this surface - if he's right then it's right for him to be out there."

Murray has risen to a career-high of nine in the world rankings despite being sidelined.

The 20-year-old Scot sustained the injury last month, forcing him out of the French Open and this week's Artois Championships at Queen's Club.

But the failure of both Ivan Ljubicic and Tommy Haas to defend ranking points in Paris has seen Murray overtake them.
