Jamie Baker is among those challenging for a Davis Cup spot |
Great Britain captain John Lloyd has called on the nation's young players to knuckle down and challenge for a starting spot on the Davis Cup team. Greg Rusedski's retirement after the weekend win over the Netherlands has opened up a free spot on the team.
"We had Jamie Baker and Richard Bloomfield here this week and there were a couple of others that were close to getting in that group," Lloyd said.
"They have been around and seen it, they know what's expected of them now."
Victory over the Netherlands earned Britain a World Group play-off tie on 21-23 September.
Andy Murray and Tim Henman are the current first-choice selections for the two singles berths in the team while Jamie Murray's impressive debut on Saturday suggests he will again be picked for the doubles.
But the retirement of Rusedski, who partnered Murray in the doubles, leaves a gap and Lloyd has called on the younger players to take advantage.
Baker and Bloomfield were used as reserves for the Netherlands tie and Lloyd believes the experience will benefit them.
"When you practise with Tim and Greg and Andy, it's a different level," said the GB captain.
"They know now that's the sort of intensity and level they have to get to if they want to step up and be in the team with a chance of playing."
Britain will discover their opponents for September's tie when the draw is made on Wednesday.
