Top seed Justine Henin produced an unimpressive display as she beat Tamira Paszek 4-6 7-5 6-1 to reach the third round of the Dubai Open. "I was pretty close to losing that. She played well, I wasn't very comfortable on the court and was far away from my best level," said Henin afterwards.
Second seed Amelie Mauresmo made more straightforward progress, easing past Vera Dushevina 6-2 6-2.
Martina Hingis advanced after beating Anabel Medina Garrigues 5-7 6-3 6-4.
Patty Schnyder and Daniela Hantuchova also went through, beating Alicia Molik and Maria Kirilenko respectively.
Third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova ended Meghann Shaughnessy's hopes with a 6-1 7-6 win, and fifth seed Jelena Jankovic also went through in straight sets, 6-3 7-5 against Mara Santangelo.
Long matches seemed to be the order of the day, with Eleni Daniilidou of Greece taking
two hours 37 minutes to beat Ai Sugiyama 5-7 6-1 7-5.
