Fifth seed Jelena Jankovic thrashed France's Aravane Rezai 6-1 6-2 on Tuesday to progress to the second round of the Dubai Open. Rezai hit some fine winners, but was undermined by a weak first serve.
"I controlled the points. I could have been better but, for the first match, I think I did quite well," said Jankovic.
Elsewhere, eighth seed Daniela Hantuchova went through with a 6-1 6-3 win over Elena Vesnina, dropping just one point on serve in the first set.
Vesnina broke in the second set to lead 2-0, but Hantuchova responded well to seal the win.
"I haven't really fulfilled my potential and what's inside me and hopefully it's going to come out," said Hantuchova.
"Overall, I'm just trying to be a bit smarter and calmer around the court."
Austrian qualifier Tamira Paszek, ranked 127th in the world, earned a surprise win over world number 23 Katarina Srebotni, winning 7-5 6-3.
Meghann Shaughnessy beat Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland 6-3 6-4, while Vera Dushevina had a more straightforward passage when her opponent Elena Likhovtseva withdrew after losing the first set 6-2.
And Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues defeated Anne Kremer 6-3 6-4, with Italy's Mara Santangelo beating Martina Muller 6-3 7-6 (7-4).
