Second seed Tommy Haas launched the defence of his Memphis International title with a 6-4 6-1 win over American Vince Spadea on Tuesday. The German booked a second-round date with Amer Delic, who prevailed over fellow American Paul Goldstein 7-5 7-6.
Fourth seed Mardy Fish eased into the second round with a routine 6-3 6-2 victory over Germany's Bjorn Phau.
The world number 25 made light work of his lower-ranked opponent and will next face Argentine Juan Martin del Potro.
Del Potro thrashed Spain's Feliciano Lopez 6-1 6-2 in his first-round clash.
