Fifth seed Xavier Malisse was forced to pull out of his first-round match at the Memphis International after injuring his right wrist. The Belgian, who has already won two titles in 2007, led Teimuraz Gabashvili of Russia 6-4 2-2 but then decided he was unable to continue. American eighth seed Robby Ginepri was beaten in three sets by Evgeny Korolev of Russia. But Austrian sixth seed Juergen Melzer edged out American Jesse Witten.
