Clijsters has repeatedly said she will quit at the end of 2007 |
Kim Clijsters began her final season with a straight-sets win over China's Zheng Jie at the Champions Challenge exhibition event in Hong Kong. The 23-year-old Belgian, who plans to retire at the end of the year, won 6-3 6-2 to reach the semi-finals.
There she will face Switzerland's Patty Schnyder, who beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 1-6 6-3 7-6 (8-6).
On Thursday, Maria Sharapova will play Yan Zi and Elena Dementieva will take on Nicole Vaidisova.
Clijsters, who won the event last year, has suffered with numerous injuries and plans to be selective in choosing tournaments this year.
"I've been doing so many exercises for the wrist, for the knee, for the hip, for the back, the whole body almost," she said. "At one stage, I was completely sick of it.
"I need to pick and choose just because of my body. I want to play well in the tournaments where I want to do well."
