Hantuchova reached the semi-finals in Linz in 2002 |
Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova was forced out of her first-round match against Elena Vesnina at the Generali Ladies in Linz with an injured rib. The world number 16, who reached the final at last week's Zurich Open, was trailing the Russian qualifier 4-3 in the first set when she retired.
But second seed Nadia Petrova, fourth seed Nicole Vaidisova and fifth seed Ana Ivanovic are all safely through.
Defending champion Petrova thrashed Israel's Shahar Peer 6-1 6-1.
Vaidisova joined Petrova in the last eight, beating Mara Santangelo of Italy 7-6 (7-4) 6-0.
Ivanovic beat Michaella Krajicek 6-1 7-6 (7-2) to reach the second round.
Also into round two is sixth seed Jelena Jankovic, who saw off Sybille Bammer of Austria 6-1 7-6 (7-2).
