Russia's Vera Zvonareva came from behind to beat eighth seed Francesca Schiavone 5-7 6-1 6-3 in the Generali Ladies first round in Linz, Austria. The Italian was still hampered by the right calf injury that forced her to pull out of Zurich Open last week.
Zvonareva took advantage and will face France's Mary Pierce, who beat Japan's Ai Sugiyama 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-5).
Seventh seed Anna Chakvetadze of Russia fought back from 4-2 down to knock out Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik 7-5 6-2.
Nathalie Dechy beat 15-year-old Austrian wildcard Tamira Paszek 2-6 6-3 6-1.
Paszek won the first set in just over 20 minutes, but sought treatment for a pulled muscle in her right leg and never recovered her form.
Mara Santangelo of Italy saw off Ukraine qualifier Alona Bondarenko 6-4 1-6 6-3, and 17-year-old Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland defeated Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany 6-4 7-5.
