Federer was in sublime form as he disposed of champion Moodie |
World number one Roger Federer romped past defending champion Wesley Moodie in the third round of the Japan Open. Federer won 6-2 6-1 in just 52 minutes to reach the last eight.
"I played great and came up with an incredible match. I hit a few really great shots but to win so convincingly was quite surprising," said Federer.
Heavy rain has restricted play to the covered centre court and means Tim Henman's match against Juan Martin Del Potro has been postponed until Friday.
Second seed Tommy Robredo beat Vincent Spadea 6-4 7-6 (11-9), while Hyung-Taik Lee of South Korea upset sixth seed Dmitry Tursunov 6-4 2-6 6-4.
Andy and Jamie Murray's doubles quarter-final against Americans Paul Goldstein and Jim Thomas has also been postponed.
Federer had struggled past a qualifier in his first outing in Tokyo but was sublime against Moodie, who was often left shaking his head in disbelief as Federer unfurled a series of winners.
"I had trouble returning on Wednesday and I was expecting worse today, but my reaction time was faster throughout the match today," said Federer.
