Mauresmo needs to find top form before next week's US Open |
Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin-Hardenne won their first matches since contesting the Wimbledon final to reach the New Haven last eight. World number one Mauresmo was made to battle past Russian qualifier Galina Voskoboeva 4-6 6-1 6-2.
But she cruised through the next two sets and now faces Lindsay Davenport, who beat Francesca Schiavone 6-4 6-2.
Number two Henin-Hardenne worked harder than the scoreline suggested for a 6-4 6-2 win over Anabel Medina Garrigues.
Mauresmo, whose return had been delayed by a week because of a shoulder injury, is seeking to find her top form before next week's US Open.
"I was not surprised it took me some time to get into the rhythm," said Mauresmo.
Henin-Hardenne agreed with her rivals assessment, saying: "I knew it would be a tough match after six weeks out.
"I really had to fight hard but now I have won I can say that it was a good match for me because it was the kind of match that I was able to find my rhythm."
The Belgian will now play lucky loser Mary Santangelo.
Third seed Elena Dementieva survived a second-set struggle to defeat Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova 6-2 5-7 6-0 and now plays Svetlana Kuznetsova.
But Marion Bartoli defeated Russian fourth seed Nadia Petriva 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7-4).
