Davenport is seeded seventh in New Haven |
Defending champion Lindsay Davenport recovered from a slow start to win her opening match against Katarina Srebotnik at the Pilot Pen tournament. Davenport managed just two points in the first two games in New Haven before hitting back for a 6-3 6-3 win.
"It was a good performance considering the amount of time I've played the last six or seven months," said Davenport after only her ninth match of 2006.
Mara Santangelo beat Anastasia Myskina, who is a US Open doubt with an injury.
The Russian was beaten 4-6 6-3 6-4 as she struggled with a foot problem.
"Of course I tried hard today but maybe not 100% because it is the US Open next week," said the 25-year-old Myskina.
"I wanted to try to see how my foot feels. It was OK but I will see the doctor. Then I have a few days to get some rest."
Fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Tatiana Golovin 6-0 2-6 6-4.
