Top seed Kim Clijsters was made to work for her place in the Acura Classic quarter-finals by Jelena Jankovic. The title holder took the first set 6-4 but her Serbian opponent fought back to win the second 6-3. However, the Belgian took the third 6-3 to progress.
Clijsters will face Martin Hingis in the quarter-finals after the Swiss beat Italy's Flavia Pennetta 6-2 3-6 6-1.
Second seed Maria Sharapova cruised past Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-4 6-4 and will next face champion Mary Pierce.
Pierce, the sixth seed, beat Finland's Emma Laine 6-2 6-1.
Russian fourth seed Elena Dementieva also dropped a set before beating Sania Mirza of India 6-2 3-6 6-3.
Czech seventh seed Nicole Vaidisova saw off Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova, the 11th seed in San Diego, 6-4 6-2.
Serbian 14th seed Ana Ivanovic was ousted in the third round by Russian Anna Chakvetadze, beaten 4-6 6-4 6-1.
