Second seed Maria Sharapova recovered from a slow start to beat fellow Russian Vasilisa Bardina in the second round of the Acura Classic on Tuesday. Sharapova, seeded behind Kim Clijsters, was 4-1 behind in the opening set only to come out 6-4 on top, then took 10 of the last 11 games to win 6-4 6-1.
Eighth seed Martina Hingis is also through to the third round after beating American Meilen Tu 6-2 6-3.
Other seeded winners included Nicole Vaidisova and Daniela Hantuchova.
But 13th seed Ai Sugiyama and number 10 Anna-Lena Groenefeld both went out of the tournament to Russians, respectively Vera Zvonareva and Elena Vesnina.
