Top seed James Blake won a third set tie-break to beat fellow American Andy Roddick 4-6 6-4 7-6 to claim the Indianapolis Open title on Sunday. Second seed Roddick comfortably took the first set but was broken in the second game of set two before Blake capitalised to level the match.
Roddick served his 17th ace of the game to save match point in the final set tie-break but Blake then closed it out.
It was Blake's second career win over Roddick in eight attempts.
"This is one of the best finals I've ever played," said Blake. "I had to play like that to beat a champion like Andy."
Roddick was disappointed to lose but felt the tournament could represent a "turning point" in what has so far been a poor season.
"This is the only final besides the 2004 Wimbledon final that I can say I've played my best tennis and lost," he said.
"Sure I'm disappointed now, but I'm sure I will look back at this week as a success. Hopefully this is a turning point."
