Blake had his work cut out against Whitehouse |
Top seeds James Blake and Andy Roddick both had to come through testing matches before reaching the last eight at the Indianapolis Open. Number one seed Blake finally ended qualifier Wesley Whitehouse's run, but not without dropping the first set as he won 6-7 6-3 6-4.
Meanwhile, second seed Roddick battled to a 7-6 7-5 win over Jeff Morrison.
"I felt I played well, but every window of opportunity I had, he came up with a huge serve or volley," said Roddick.
"I played some of my best stuff this year, but I barely got the win. I was fortunate."
Defending champion Robby Ginepri beat Russia's Igor Kunitsyn 6-2 6-7 6-1, while third seed Fernando Gonzalez saw off Vince Spadea 6-4 7-6.
