Nadal overcomes brave Bogdanovic
Rafel Nadal celebrates a winning point against Alex Bogdanovic
Nadal has never gone beyond the third round at Wimbledon
Number two seed Rafael Nadal was made to work hard before defeating British number four Alex Bogdanovic 6-4 7-6 6-4 in the first round at Wimbledon.

Bogdanovic held his own early on before the French Open champion broke his serve at 4-4 and served out the opener.

Nadal enjoyed an early break in the second but was broken as he served for the set by the 22-old-year Brit, who forced a tie-break only to succumb 7-3.

Nadal took the third 6-4 to complete victory in two hours, 31 minutes.

The Spaniard said he experienced no problems with the shoulder injury which forced him out of the Stella Artois Championships, but admitted he was not entirely happy with his form.

"Not much, especially my forehand," he said. "It was important to win the first match, it is never easy."

Nadal has never been beyond the third round in two previous appearances and faces American Robert Kendrick next.

Bogdanovic said: "I think he's getting used to grass now. He's got a title in the future and it could be this year.

"He's adapted to grass really well, it shows what a great player he is. I did the best I could do, he's an awesome player."

Twelfth seed Thomas Johansson was the first seed to go out this year when he lost 3-6 7-6 6-1 6-1 to Jonas Bjorkman.

The former Australian Open champion, a semi-finalist last year, won the first set before rain ended play on Monday.

But fellow Swede Bjorkman, who has won three doubles titles at Wimbledon, dominated the match on Tuesday.

Australian Mark Philippoussis beat 32nd seed Paul-Henri Mathieu of France and Argentine Agustin Calleri put out 29th seed Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand.

Philippoussis battled hard for a 5-7 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 7-6 (12-10) victory while Calleri triumphed 6-7 (3-7) 7-5 6-3 3-6 6-3 in another epic battle.

Fourth seed David Nalbandian crushed South Africa's Wesley Moodie 6-3 6-4 6-1 in just one hour 37 minutes.

But the 2002 runner-up revealed he was not completely over the abdominal injury which forced him to pull out of the French Open semi-finals.

"I didn't feel 100% comfortable because of the injury, but the next few rounds will be better," said the Argentine.

"Every time I come here, I play good tennis. I can play better than this and I think I have a chance to get to the final."

Seventh seed Mario Ancic, a possible quarter-finalist for Roger Federer, delighted his army of Croatian fans by beating Spain's Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (7-2) 7-5 7-6 (7-4) on a packed Court 13.

Eighth-seeded James Blake was a 6-3 7-5 5-7 6-4 winner over Danish qualifier Kristian Pless.

Fourteenth seed Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic beat Frank Dancevic of Canada 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 6-4.

French 21st seed Gael Monfils had a less happy Tuesday.

The 19-year-old former Wimbledon junior champion has been suffering from a back problem and looked unhappy in a 5-7 7-6 6-3 6-4 defeat to Russian Igor Kunitsyn, who had not won a match on tour this year.

Dominik Hrbaty, seeded 20, put up even less of a fight against Italian Daniele Bracciali, who comfortably beat the Slovakian 6-2 6-4 6-4.

Elsewhere, there were wins for 10th seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, 11th seed Tommy Robredo of Spain, 19th seed Tommy Haas of Germany and 24th seed Juan Carlos Ferrero, also of Spain.
