Survival of the British

By Sophie Brown
BBC Sport at Wimbledon

The first day of Wimbledon 2006 and something in the air suggests that many of the 15 Britons in the singles draw could still be in the tournament by the end of play. Positive vibes? No, it's called rain.

Naomi Cavaday
Cavaday suffers defeat on her Wimbledon debut

1245: The bad omens are already building - out on Court 13 British number 13 Naomi Cavaday is due to start the home-based assault on Wimbledon 2006.

Play has already been delayed 45 minutes by the weather but there is a big cheer when it is announced over the public address system that it will start at 1300 - that's British Summer Time, not that you can tell from the drizzle that has caused a queue at the plastic mac stall.

1306: The crowd begin to agitate as there are sounds of knocking up on adjacent courts but no sign of the players on Court 13. A slow handclap starts. So far, so British.

1315: Kent number one Cavaday is taking on world number 21 Ai Sugiyama, and has won the toss - could this be a good omen? But the 17-year-old, playing her first Wimbledon, causes immediate crowd wincing when she concedes the first point with a mistimed backhand that balloons long.

1320: The teenager drops serve with a double fault and is soon a double-break down. British hopes are not so much seeping away as spiralling down the plughole.

1331: Cavaday has begun to settle her nerves. There's a definite swing in momentum and the crowd begin to get behind the Brit - the first shouts of "Come on, Naomi!" are heard. She breaks Sugiyama and looks to be in the ascendancy until... it starts raining and play is suspended.

1920: Play is finally abandoned for the day. A miserable day for the crowd but looking on the bright side, there are still 15 Brits in the singles draw.

DAY TWO

The sun is out - how long before British hopefuls go the same way?

Katie O'Brien
O'Brien was not allowed to enjoy the taste of victory
1200: It's not an auspicious start - Tathiana Garbin is out on Court 14 ready for her match with Katie O'Brien but there's no sign of the British number three. She eventually turns up and is broken in her first service game - is it clouding over already?

1241: Hope is restored as Garbin is unable to hold serve in the opening set, which O'Brien wins 6-2.

1305: O'Brien is cruising, a set and a break up - is this the Draper effect? Meanwhile, Tim Henman gets his Wimbledon campaign under way on Court One.

1339: Henman loses the first-set tie-break against Robin Soderling but wins the second set. O'Brien's attempt to avoid a third successive Wimbledon first-round defeat is derailed. She loses the second-set tie-break - and the deciding set.

1510: Naomi Cavaday resumes her match against Ai Sugiyama. The Briton loses the first five points as Sugiyama takes the first set - this is the cue for the amateur analysts in the crowd. "The problem with the British players is that they have no hunger," says one spectator. Henman wins the third set.

Tim Henman
Once again Henman makes British fans sweat

1535 Cavaday breaks in the second set and the crowd sense an upset - clapping continental-style before points - it could be Roland Garros. Henman drops the fourth set.

1620 Henman comes through in five sets. Cavaday is broken twice as Sugiyama clinches victory. "The British girl just isn't fit," says our crowd expert. "Would you like ham and tomato or cheese and pickle?" his companion replies.

1630: British number one Anne Keothavong begins her match against Katrina Sprem on Court Six while in the opposite corner of the All England grounds on Court 17, British number seven Richard Bloomfield faces Carlos Berlocq.

1648: Court Six, with its adjacent walkway, is a bit of a thoroughfare for spectators, and Keothavong herself looks like someone who is not stopping long at Wimbledon as she drops the first set 6-0. Things look better for Bloomfield, though, who has taken the first set 6-1.

1730: Keothavong's brief sojourn caps an unhappy day for Britain's women - played three, lost three. Now it's over to the men. Greg Rusedski, her counterpart at the top of the men's rankings, has started his match against Marat Safin on Court Three.

Richard Bloomfield
Bloomfield: An American in disguise

1740: There are plenty of empty seats on Court 17 despite the fact that Bloomfield is closing in on a famous home win. Is it because people haven't realised he is British? He looks a bit preppy-American in his white cap and he wins in such straightforward, comprehensive fashion - doesn't he realise that's not the done thing?

1820: Home fans are spoilt for choice with a glut of Britons in action around Wimbledon, including Andy Murray, Alex Bogdanovic, Rusedski and Jamie Baker.

1820: Murray races through the opening set but Rusedski goes one set down to Safin. "Do you think he'll start swearing?" asks a fan watching on the big screen.

1912: Rusedski crumbles to a straight-sets defeat to Safin but there is better news for Delgado, who is two sets up. Bogdanovic and Baker both trail their opponents by a set.

1940: It's getting gloomy but Murray sends the Centre Court crowd home happy with a straight-sets win. Delgado drops the third set and is struggling in the fourth while Bogdanovic loses a second-set tie-break. But Baker has levelled at one-set all.

2020: It's the perfect Wimbledon crowd-pleaser - a five-setter that goes on late into the evening with a Briton winning - in this case it's Delgado. But minutes later, Bogdanovic crashes out in straight sets against Rafael Nadal.

2058 With darkness falling, Baker finally succumbs. In the first 48 hours, British hopes have been hit for six with half-a-dozen players defeated. But with four men through and five players still to play, the fans can dream on...
