Hingis won her last title in Tokyo four years ago |
Martina Hingis won her first title in over four years as she beat Dinara Safina in the final of the Italian Open in Rome on Sunday. The former world number one, who returned to tennis in January after a three-year break, won 6-2 7-5.
Hingis endured a nervous second set, letting a 4-1 lead slip and wasting two match points on Safina's serve at 5-3.
The Swiss was pegged back but broke again for 6-5 and saved four break points before finally sealing victory.
Her last tournament win came with victory over Monica Seles in Tokyo in February, 2002.
"I never thought I'd be here again," said Hingis.
"But they say never give up hope and keep fighting, and here I am. It's just great to be back on top of the game."
Hingis returned to the Tokyo final this year, where she was heavily beaten by Elena Dementieva, but in general her comeback has surpassed expectations.
She is likely to return to the top 15 in the world rankings on Monday, and does not rule out her chances at the forthcoming French Open.
"Well, I had my chances in the past," she said. "This year there are many good players who can do well in the tournament.
"I've always said I'm a good horse but still an underdog, though definitely this win in Rome will give my confidence a big boost."
