Hingis struggled with her serve but still won comfortably |
Former champion Martina Hingis made a winning return to the Italian Open, beating qualifier Sara Errani 6-0 6-1 in the first round. Hingis struggled with her serve on the clay court, double-faulting five times, but Errani could not take advantage.
"My level dropped a bit in the closing stages of the match, but I got it all back," Hingis said.
Venus Williams, who beat Hingis at the J&S Cup 11 days ago, eased past Czech qualifier Zuzana Ondraskova 6-3 6-2.
Hingis goes on to face 12th seed Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic, who defeated Finland's Emma Laine.
There were also wins for Vera Dushevina and Maria Sanchez Lorenzo.
