Clijsters made 78 unforced errors during her defeat |
Belgian Kim Clijsters was sent crashing out of the Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami after a shock second-round defeat to world number 54 Jill Craybas. Playing for the first time in more than a month, second seed Clijsters suffered a 7-5 3-6 7-5 loss.
In other matches, fourth seed Maria Sharapova of Russia had little trouble seeing off China's Na Li 6-2 6-4.
And Sharapova's compatriot, sixth seed Elena Dementieva, was a 6-3 6-1 winner over Anna Tatishvili of Georgia.
A rusty Clijsters double-faulted 11 times and committed 78 unforced errors against Craybas, who overcame a 4-2 deficit in the third set for her best result since beating Serena Williams at Wimbledon last year.
The match was Clijsters' first tournament appearance since losing the final in Antwerp to Amelie Mauresmo on 19 February after the recurrence of an ankle injury.
"I need my matches," said the 22-year-old. "You don't get (form) back one-two-three by practising well.
"You don't get it back straightaway. Matches are what I'm definitely lacking.
"It's frustrating at times because you feel like you can't really play your best tennis."
