Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis has been granted a 12-year reprieve from military service with the Greek Cypriot army. The decision will allow the 20-year-old to continue with his tennis career before joining the military aged 32.
Presidential under-secretary Christodoulos Pashardis said: "Marcos Baghdatis never requested exemption, but exactly the opposite."
Baghdatis has risen to number 27 in the world after his exploits in Melbourne.
