Mario Ancic brought new star Marcos Baghdatis down to earth with victory in the first round of the Marseille Open on Wednesday. The Croatian saw off Baghdatis 6-2 6-7 (9-11) 6-4 in the Cypriot's first match since the Australian Open final.
Fifth seed and world number 15 Richard Gasquet suffered a shock 3-6 6-4 6-0 exit to wild card Arnaud Clement.
After Gasquet won the first set 6-3 Clement stunned his Davis Cup team-mate by taking the next two sets 6-4 6-0.
"I went too far in the Davis Cup to do something here," said 19-year-old Gasquet.
"I was empty mentally and physically and just not very good."
Swedish fourth seed Thomas Johansson also crashed out as French veteran Fabrice Santoro beat him 6-4 7-6, setting up a clash with Britain's Greg Rusedski.
But second seed Ivan Ljubicic, of Croatia, did survive against Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-3.
Despite making a good start, France's Gael Monfils bowed out to experienced compatriot Sebastien Grosjean, the number eight seed.
Monfils took the first set but local boy Grosjean battled back to win 2-6 7-5 6-3.
