Mauresmo has been in prime form |
Defending champion Amelie Mauresmo cruised into the quarter-finals of the Diamond Games with a 6-3 6-3 victory over Czech Iveta Benesova. The Australian Open champion was seldom troubled but hopes to improve her form. "I am just glad to get through and hope to play better tomorrow," she said.
The French world number two, chasing a third straight tour title, will now face sixth seeded Swiss Patty Schnyder.
Elsewhere, Ukraine's Olga Savchuk upset ninth seed Daniel Hantuchova 6-4 6-3.
The qualifier completely outplayed the Slovakian world number 14, ranked 99 places above her, and will face Russian Nadia Petrova in the quarter-finals.
Petrova's compatriot Elena Dementieva hit 13 double faults but still progressed with a 6-3 7-6 victory over Poland's Marta Domachowska.
The fifth seed now faces Greece's Elena Daniilidou for a place in the last four.
Top seed Kim Clijsters will meet Dinara Safina of Russia in the other quarter-final.
