Home favourites Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi wasted little time in reaching the fourth round in Indian Wells. Agassi delighted the crowd with an impressive 6-3 6-4 win over Andrei Pavel in the night session.
"I needed to be executing my shots, controlling the terms and I knew it would be toe to toe," said Agassi, who now plays Guillermo Coria.
Roddick booked a meeting with big-hitting Fernando Gonzalez after crushing Jiri Novak 6-1 6-2.
"It was easier than I expected," Roddick admitted after just 45 minutes on court.
"I don't think you ever expect to win a match out here in a Masters
Series event 1-2. I don't think he ever found his rhythm out there."
Chilean Gonzalez recovered from an awful second set to beat American James Blake 6-4 0-6 6-3.
Tenth seed David Nalbandian also overcame a second-set blip as he beat Jonas Bjorkman.
The Argentine raced through the first set and held off a Bjorkman comeback to wrap up a 6-1 3-6 6-1 victory.
Spain's Tommy Robredo, seeded 12, beat Thomas Enqvist of Sweden 4-6 6-2 7-6 (7-4) and will meet Britain's Tim Henman in the last 16.
Number five seed Coria brushed aside Paradorn Srichaphan 6-4 6-2.
